Free Data Recovery Presentation!

Alright, I consider this a good find! While surfing YouTube the other day, I came across some videos about Data Recovery. Companies that specialize in this can easily charge you up to $3000 for a regular 40GB hard drive. For example, at work I have used DriveSavers a number of times, and their charge depends on the amount of recovered data. They usually charge at least an attempt fee of $200.

The free videos I found are cut in 7 takes of each like 9 minutes. So it's a roughly one hour long presentation given by Scott Moulton. He gives a lot of information about how hard drives work, how they are assembled, how data can be recovered, and what can and can't be done. Do you know about the freezer trick? Do you think hard drives are hermetically sealed? Well, see what tips Scott has for you. Here is the first part. You can also find them all on his website at MyHardDriveDied.com.

I watched Scott's presentation and thought it was pretty good. I have to say though it seems weird that he'd present a bunch of info that would basically take business away from his own company.

Also, if I needed data recovery and my files were super important I'd rather send it to a professional company (ontrack or drivesavers) than risk sending it to someone that saw a presentation and has little or no experience.

Thanks for your comment. I am guessing that this video is to build trust in his company. Like you say, if it's important data, people are more likely to contact him to do it for them, than to try tricks and risk permanent data loss. Even if it's bad business practice, I'm thankful for free information :)

At this site you can compare data recovery quotes, I haven't seen any other sites that does that, was very valuable in my case.

I am not worried about losing business. There are plenty of bad hard drives to go around. Also, my primary company is forensics. We do data recovery because it is very similar to the first portion of doing forensics and it helps my people build and maintain skills.

Also I just released a new Advanced data recovery video, kinda a Part II with more detail.

I used DriveFish.com and got all my data back for $199 + shipping. Pretty sweet deal and they were really nice. If you have trouble I recommend calling them.
